Hazmat Situation On I-580 Causes Delays For Hours On Friday

The Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) says north and southbound I-580 were shut down due to a hazmat situation on Friday afternoon.

The Reno Fire Department is reporting that it's a spill of 'construction-grade muriatic acid.' They say the material has been contained.

Northbound lanes were shut down at Mill Street and southbound lanes were shut down at Plumb Lane. Lanes in both directions have since reopened.

The incident was initially reported just after 2 p.m.

Drivers should use alternate routes and avoid the area if possible.

Officials with the Reno-Tahoe International Airport are also advising that this incident is impacting incoming and outgoing traffic from the airport.

They say anyone coming or going from the airport needs to use surface streets.

NHP is asking for anyone who may have seen five to ten gallon bucket-sized canisters fall off any type of vehicle to contact them with case number 191201019.
