Federal authorities are investigating a small plane crash that killed two people near the Susanville Municipal Airport early Saturday afternoon.

When emergency crews arrived, they found a small, single engine Piper PA 14 airplane with severe damage.

Inside they found the bodies of 45-year-old Kevin Fore of Redding and 35-year-old Krista Holstrom of Grants Pass, Oregon.

Lassen County deputies say a witness saw the plane take off from a dirt runway, fly up 400-500 feet in the air and then take a sharp turn and crash into the ground.

The Lassen County Sheriff’s Office, along with Susanville Police, Susan River Fire and other agencies responded to the scene.
