Kamra Inlay Device to Restore Near Vision

Christine Hilts is a model, a clothing designer, an actress and a singer. "First impression is everything. It's wonderful to walk in the room dressed for the part and ready for the audition." The performer admits that the first impression can quickly change the minute she fumbles for her reading glasses to study a script. "I had farsightedness so bad. You're constantly searching for readers."

Christine looked into a new procedure being performed at Nevada Eye Consultants. Ophthalmic Surgeon, Dr. David B. Chaffin is the first in northern Nevada to implant the AcuFocus Kamra Inlay device into to surface layers of the eye. "It's a micro-thin inlay. It's smaller than a contact lens and it's thinner than a red blood cell,” he describes. The Kamra technology is the first FDA-approved surgical, implantable device to treat a very common condition called presbyopia. "As a person ages, the lens inside the eye hardens. As it hardens, a person loses their ability to focus up close."

Like the Lasik procedure, the patient is awake during surgery; under a local anesthesia. The Kamra Inlay device is implanted to create a pinhole effect to allow only focused light rays to enter the eye, which is what restores vision. "This is about a five-minute procedure that can eliminate the need for reading glasses." Dr. Chaffin says you cannot see it, feel it and it does not affect distance vision. Many patients experience dry eye for a couple weeks after the procedure which is why eye drops are prescribed. Patients use an eye shield the night of the procedure, too.

Other than that, Christine adds, "There is very little downtime, very little discomfort. I saw results immediately." She says this operation changed her life. "Just being able to do the simple things in life again is just wonderful."

Ideal candidates for the Kamra Inlay are generally people over 50 years old who need readers or bifocals.
