Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful Great Community Cleanup Saturday

Broken beer bottles, old couches, and even discarded kayaks are what you might find at several illegal dumping sites across the Truckee Meadows.  This weekend, volunteers are spreading their efforts across the community to clean those sites up.

There are 22 targeted sites to be cleaned up as part of Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful "Great Community Clean Up" on Saturday, May 5th. From 8 A.M. until noon, volunteers will pick up trash in those specific areas.

The clean-up is an effort that not only beautifies the unsightly problem areas, but also benefits the environment in the process.

Christi Cakiroglu, Executive Director of KTMB, explains, "Invasive weeds tend to seed in spring, so we want to pull them before they spread down the river. So, it's a great opportunity to remove invasive weeds and trash at the same time."

Gary Meckler has volunteered for the clean-up for the last 14 years. He says the concept is simple, "It's just a matter of taking pride in where you live."

He also has a question for the illegal dumpers, "Why? Is there no other place, did you exhaust all other avenues to get rid of it?"

For those who may be looking for more appropriate places to take your unwanted items and other trash, see KTMB's recycling guide here.
