Killed NDOT Worker Remembered in Carson City

At the NDOT Maintenance Worker Memorial Wall in Carson City, there were 23 names on it. Monday, though, the 24th name was added.

"I grieve for the moments of his death," said Susan Arding, mother of Ron Raiche Jr. "I fear for his pain in agony. Please drive safely. Keep people alive."

Raiche is the 24th NDOT employee to lose their life while working since 1948. He was struck and killed by a semi-truck on March 30th while doing concrete repairs on I-80 near Battle Mountain.

"(He was) a very hard working Nevada state employee who was tremendously proud to serve the people of Nevada in a job that's often taken for granted," said Arding.

She fought back tears as the star-- representing her son, was revealed on the memorial by Governor Brian Sandoval.

"It didn't have to happen," said Sandoval.

Family, coworkers, and friends came to show their respects for a fun, loud, and very hardworking man.

"He was like an ox," said Seth Henderson, a friend of Raiche. "He was really strong."

Henderson, a road worker himself says doing construction is a dangerous job, and it's often overlooked by the public.

"The guy that said he could never get hit, got hit," said Henderson.

Sandoval says Raiche's death serves as a reminder for Nevada drivers to use extra caution in construction zones.

"I'm hoping everybody will slow down and pay attention to the men and women who are out there trying to keep our roads safe," the Governor said.Â
