The Federal Emergency Management Agency has authorized the use of federal funds to assist the state of Nevada in combating the Loyalton Fire.
Last Friday, the state of Nevada submitted a request for a Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG) for the Loyalton Fire. At the time of the request, the fire threatened approximately 200 homes in and around Red Rock, Rancho Haven and Columbia Hills. The fire had threatened ten businesses, a wildlife sanctuary, the Rancho Haven Watershed, high-voltage transmission lines and a power transmission substation. Mandatory evacuations were in place for approximately 1,000 people, with voluntary evacuations for approximately 2,000 people.
Evacuees who need shelter are prompted to call the Lassen County Emergency Shelter at (530)250-9088.Â
The American Red Cross has also opened an evacuation center at the Washoe County Senior Services Building at 1155 East 9th Street in Reno.
People with special needs who need help evacuating should call (530)257-6121 and let officials know what is needed to evacuate.
The smoke from the fire can be seen from the Reno, Sparks and Truckee areas. Â
TMFR says their 911 dispatch centers are being overwhelmed with calls about this fire. There are currently no active fires in Washoe County. They ask the public to refrain from contacting 911 to report smoke from Loyalton.
The Tahoe National Forest officials say the fire is burning grass, sage and juniper. The fire has spread north toward the community of Chilcoot and east into Long Valley.Â
