Across the country, this is the 33rd Annual National Night Out, the 14th time that the Carson City Sheriff's Office has participated.
  Â
National Night Out is a time for the whole community to interact with local law enforcement and other agencies in a way to build stronger relationships.
  Â
Organizers anticipate that about 9,000 people will roll through Mills Park in Carson City throughout the night.
Everyone who comes will have a chance to interact with the local police officers, fire department, military officials and other agencies.
“We build those relationships before you have a problem so that when the challenges are in front of us we can better work together."
  Â
Sheriff Ken Furlong says the popular phrase that will be used to help stamp out crime. That's because one goal behind the National Night Out campaign is to send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are fighting back.
  Â
Sheriff Furlong says the community will do that at tonight's event by learning how to access available public safety resources in their area and raising their own crime prevention awareness.
“As a community that's where we draw our power from, a community spirit to report circumstances to the law enforcement and we can better focus our resources into those areas."
All the food, fun and activities will go on until 8 p.m.Â
