After taking his own life at just 13-years-old in 2019, Alec Murray saved and healed others through the gift of tissue donation.
"It's special for us to be able to honor Alec and the hero that he was and the gifts that he bestowed to about 75 and 85 people through tissue donation." Says Joseph Ferreira, President and CEO of Nevada Donor Network.Â
Nevada Donor Network (NDN) and the City of Reno honored Alec's parents selfless decision to donate their son's tissue to so many in need. The City of Reno announced it now recognizes October 24, 2020 as Alec Murray Donor Hero Day.
"That was a huge surprise and a quite an honor for Alec and our family, to be recognized like that, we'll hold that near and dear to our hearts. It was a big surprise, big surprise. " Says Paige and Lee Murray, Alec's Parents.Â
During the ceremony loved ones and friends were able to finish decorating Alec's floragraph- a portrait made of natural materials- which will be featured as part of the Donate Life Rose Parade Experience among others from around the country who have also given the gift of life through organ, eye and tissue donation.
According to NDN there are more than 100,000 Americans currently waiting for a vital organ transplant. Twenty of those people pass away waiting for a transplant every day.
"In order to help those people who are desperately waiting we've got to get as many people registered as we can to become heroic donors." Says Ferreira.Â
