An 8-year-old child is in the hospital after being attacked by a dog.

The child was treated by medics and flown by helicopter to Renown Medical Center. The extent of their injuries is unknown, but they are expected to live.

On Thursday afternoon, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office, Central Lyon County Fire Department and Lyon County Animal Control were called to Riverboat Road in Dayton for a dog bite.

There, they found the 8-year-old with significant injuries from the family's dog. The dog was a 50-pound Shar Pei.

The Sheriff's Office and Animal Control attempted to gain control over the dog, who was actively vicious and trying to attack. However, they were unable to safely secure the aggressive dog.

Animal Control and the dog's owner both requested for the dog to be euthanized. Lyon County Sheriff's Office Personnel euthanized the dog on the scene.

The dog will undergo testing to see if it suffered from any infectious diseases.

It is unknown at this time what caused the dog to become vicious. The incident, including the dog's owners, are under investigation to determine if criminal conduct occurred during or before the incident.

We will update you as we receive more information.
