The Alpine County Sheriff’s Office has announced the closure of the Bear Valley subdivision roads effective at 6:00 p.m. on December 25 due to heavy snow and winter conditions.
The roads will remain closed for the 2025/2026 winter season.
Officials recommend that people remove their cars from the subdivision roads as soon as possible. One lane of traffic will remain open until 4:00 p.m. before the full closure takes effect at 6:00 p.m.
Access through the town’s commercial core has been limited to one-way traffic for snow removal operations.
The sheriff’s office advised drivers to yield to emergency vehicles and practice safe winter driving.
The office also provided tips for driving safely on mountain roads during winter:
Check weather and road conditions – Mountain weather can change quickly, so check forecasts and road conditions before traveling. Carry snow chains if required.
Descend slowly and use engine braking – Use low gears when going downhill to maintain control and avoid relying solely on brakes. Apply brakes gently.
Be prepared for isolation – Keep an emergency kit with blankets, food, water, a flashlight, and a fully charged phone. Inform someone of your route and expected arrival time.
Adjust for elevation changes – Higher elevations can have colder temperatures and more snow or ice. Watch for black ice in shaded areas, on bridge decks, and near water crossings.
Respect avalanche and snowfall warnings – Pay attention to signs and warnings about avalanches or falling rocks. Avoid stopping in areas prone to avalanches or heavy snow accumulation.
Residents are urged to follow the guidance to avoid accidents or getting stranded in winter conditions.
