Following yet another vegetation fire, the Sierra County Sheriff's Office is urging the public to exercise caution around campfires.

This most recent fire, dubbed the "Bassetts Fire," is thought to have been caused by an illegal campfire that escaped in a remote area near Milton Reservoir.

The fire was reported around 3:30 p.m. on Friday, October 25.

This prompted a full response from the U.S. Forest Service and local fire agencies, including the use of airtankers and a helicopter.

The fire broke out approximately 6 miles south of Bassetts, California.

At the time the fire was reported, it was about 3/4 to 1 acre in size, with a slow to moderate spread, burning heavy timber and brush.

Around 4:45 p.m. the progression of the fire had been stopped, with the size right around 1/4 acre.

The Tahoe Helitack Crew and engine crews helped to box the fire in with retardant, and water drops were conducted.

Crews remained on scene through the night to mop up and patrol the area.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation but believed to be an illegal escaped campfire.

Sierra County officials have reported that there are no suspects connected to the originating illegal campfire.

The Sierra County Sheriff’s Office reminds all outdoor recreationists to adhere to U.S. Forest Service guidelines, avoid illegal campfires, and report any illegal campfires immediately.
