As of 9:30 p.m. Sunday, Interstate 80 is open in both directions over Donner Summit. Chains or four-wheel drive with snow tires are required between Truckee and Emigrant Gap.
Multiple I-80 closures over the weekend pushed back travel for dozens of drivers, even making them question whether to spend another night at a hotel.
A group of friends from the Bay Area stayed in Reno to gamble for the weekend, and Sunday's closure caused serious delays.
"We sat in an hour and a half of traffic just to get here, to get told that the road is closed,” Jasmine Jones said. “We bought the chains. We were ready to put them on, and we can't even go.”
Jones said the return trip back to her kids in Santa Cruz turned into an expensive one.
“We didn't have a choice. We're about $250 in for chains and applying, and we still can't go home,” she said.
"I try to avoid here during the winter. This April snow kind of caught us off guard,” said Okem Ngumezi.
Ngumezi drove up from Rocklin, California, with his daughter for a weekend volleyball tournament. He said message signs along the road were not updated in time to warn drivers of the closure.
“Even the app didn't say it was closed,” he said. “And until we got to where we're about to get on to the 80, and [Caltrans] said, ‘no, it's closed.’ So, we've been here for about 20, almost 30 minutes. We’ll see if we can wait it out. But who knows how long that's going to take, and I would prefer not to drive it at night."
Thankfully, he didn't have to.
I-80 reopened about an hour after 2 News Nevada interviewed Ngumezi, so him, Jones, and dozens of other travelers continued their journey over Donner Summit Sunday night.
