The South Lake Tahoe Police Department's Marine Unit is offering advice for boaters to stay safe during this year's American Century Celebrity Golf Championship.
The event is set to take place at Edgewood Tahoe from July 9 to 13, and in a post on Facebook, the SLTPD says they want to make sure boaters participating in water festivities near Edgewood Tahoe have a great and safe experience.
Here are their tips.
- Give yourself plenty of time getting through town, launching your vessel, and parking.
- Have a plan in place, research the winds and weather, and have plenty of food and warm/foul-weather clothing on board, as weather can change quickly.
- Check safety equipment, especially personal flotation devices. Make sure you have enough life vests, check for fit, and have them readily accessible.
- Have a sound device, a fire extinguisher, and a throwable Type IV cushion. They also highly suggest a marine band radio in the case of an emergency.
- Check to make sure your Anchor Rode is in good condition and is proper for the depth of where you plan to anchor. Remember, there is soft sand off the shores of Edgewood Tahoe, and it is known to be windy in the summer afternoons.
- Have your cell phones fully charged and, in an emergency, call 911. Using 911 immediately shows your lat/long to enable rescuers to know your location.
- If you plan to be out on the lake at night, please check to be sure all your navigation lights are working.
- Do not drink and operate a boat.
