A skier was not hurt after triggering an avalanche on Mt. Olsen in Virginia Lakes in Mono County this past weekend.
The Eastern Sierra Avalanche Center says the skier was carried about 150 feet after a hard slab of snow broke off at 10,600 feet.
On Facebook, the center says, "Early season turns can be a powerful draw to backcountry skiers, but this is a great reminder that avalanches are on the menu. It is also important to consider that triggering an avalanche at the moment comes with elevated consequences due to the low coverage and exposed rocks."
