NLTFPD Summer Fire Restriction Flyer

Summer fire restrictions are now in effect for Incline Village and Crystal Bay, as the local fire districts works to reduce wildfire risk during the dry season.

As of May 1, open burning, including wood, slash, and needle piles, is no longer allowed.

Recreational fires, such as wood or charcoal fires in non-combustible containers with a 1/8-inch mesh screen, are still permitted with a valid fire permit.

However, recreational fires are not allowed at short-term rental properties.

Barbeque grilling using natural gas, propane, or charcoal is permitted, but all grilling equipment must be operated according to the manufacturer’s guidelines. This includes gas grills, charcoal grills, smokers, and pellet stoves.

Fire officials urge residents and visitors to follow safety precautions when using grills and outdoor cooking equipment:

  • Only use propane, charcoal, or other solid-fuel grills outdoors.
  • Keep grills away from homes, deck railings, and overhanging branches.
  • Maintain a three-foot safety zone around grills, especially for children and pets.
  • Clean grills regularly to prevent grease buildup.
  • Never leave a grill unattended.
  • Always open the lid of gas grills before lighting.

Charcoal Grill Reminders:

Charcoal grills are not allowed on combustible surfaces. To light them, residents are encouraged to use charcoal chimney starters or electric starters designed for outdoor use.

Only charcoal starter fluid should be used; flammable liquids must not be added to an open flame.

Charcoal should be fully cooled before disposal.

Residents who use wood-burning appliances may qualify for a free ash can from the fire district.

Applications are available at the Fire District Administration Office, 866 Oriole Way, Incline Village.

Propane Grill Safety Tips:

  • Check the gas hose for leaks at the beginning of each grilling season using a soap and water solution.
  • If a leak is detected, turn off the gas and have the grill inspected before use.
  • Do not move the grill if gas is smelled during use; leave the area and call the fire department.
  • If the flame goes out, turn off the grill and gas, and wait at least 15 minutes before re-lighting.

Residents are reminded that no open flames of any kind are allowed during Red Flag Warnings. Fire restrictions may vary on federally managed land.
