Truckee Fire enacts 2025 burn ban

The Truckee Fire Protection District has announced a burn ban for the 2025 wildfire season.

The ban restricts the use of all residential campfires, bonfires, charcoal barbecues, and any outdoor cooking involving solid fuel such as wood or lump charcoal.

The ban is part of a collaboration with Cal Fire and other regional fire agencies to reduce wildfire risks.

Residents and visitors are permitted to use outdoor gas devices, including gas fire pits, gas barbecues, pellet barbecues such as Traegers, and indoor fireplaces.

The ban took effect June 23 and will remain in place through the fall.

It applies to all residents, visitors and businesses within the Truckee Fire district boundaries.

Exceptions include designated state and federal campgrounds and day-use picnic areas with a valid permit, as well as permitted special events and commercial cooking operations.

Truckee Fire, local homeowners associations and regional fire chiefs have all agreed on the need for the restrictions.

According to the Western Fire Chiefs Association, nearly 90% of wildfires in the United States are caused by humans, most of them unintentionally.

Truckee Fire has responded to multiple escaped fires in recent years, often started by campfires or improper disposal of charcoal ash.

Additional restrictions may be put in place on red flag days, depending on weather conditions.

The ban extends across the Truckee Tahoe region and the greater Sierra Nevada communities.

Residents are advised to check with their local fire district for specific rules and updates.

Truckee Fire is also encouraging residents to clear brush and debris around their homes to help create defensible space.
