Sparks City Attorney Wes Duncan has announced his intention to run for Washoe County District Attorney in 2026.

Currently, that position is filled by Chris Hicks.

Duncan was sworn in as the 17th Sparks City Attorney on April 25, 2022.

I am honored to be law enforcement’s choice in this race for Washoe County District Attorney. As a father of four young kids and an Iraq war veteran, I understand how critical it is to protect our community from crime and keep our county safe,” said Duncan.

We have a lot of work to do, but I know that by strengthening the relationship between law enforcement and the District Attorney’s Office, it will be a new day in Washoe County for public safety.”

In response, current Washoe County DA Hicks sent us this statement:

"I wasn’t surprised to hear Wes Duncan is once again campaigning for political office - just months after being elected to a different one. That’s been his pattern. In the 11 years I’ve served as District Attorney, he’s held 7 different jobs and run for 4 separate offices - often using one election as a platform to launch another.

"These are challenging times, and now more than ever, we need real leaders - people with deep roots in this community, proven experience, and a genuine commitment to public service. Not politicians chasing titles and notoriety.

"For the past 23 years, I’ve had the privilege of serving as a prosecutor in the community that raised me. Washoe County is my home, and I’ve dedicated my entire career to protecting our families, friends, and neighborhoods. Being District Attorney is an honor I don’t take lightly. I stand firmly behind my experience, integrity, and record of results.

"There is still important work to do. In 2026, voters will face a clear choice - and I welcome the opportunity to stand on my record and dedication alongside Wes Duncan’s."
