In an exclusive interview, Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto endorsed Nevada Congressional District 2 Candidate Teresa Benitez-Thompson.
“Not only does she know northern Nevada, she has fought in the Assembly for northern Nevada on the issues that are important for so many people here. She understands the housing policy, understands health care, she understands childcare. She understands keeping our community safe,” said Sen. Cortez Masto.
“I'm very honored to have this endorsement because to me, Senator Cortez Masto is the example of someone who reaches across the aisle to make sure that Nevada can thrive when she's talking about policy, when she's talking to constituents, it’s not about Democrats or Republicans or nonpartisan,” said Benitez-Thompson.
The endorsement comes in the midst of the Supreme Court releasing decisions on many hot-button topics for Nevadans, including birthright citizenship and transgender athletes in women's sports.
The Supreme Court reaffirmed birthright citizenship with its ruling.
“What we want to do most in America is prevent some type of a caste system, prevent a system in which I'm more American than you, and therefore I'm more entitled than you, because that absolutely undercuts the notion of equality for all. If we want to get to equality for all, it starts simply with not having limitations on citizenship that targets certain people over others,” said Benitez-Thompson.
The court also ruled in favor of states’ right to ban transgender women and girls from playing on female school athletic teams in Idaho and West Virginia.
“I think it's important that politicians, particularly politicians who are so far away from the classroom and local athletics, to stay out of the process,” said Cortez Masto.
Benitez-Thompson will be facing off with David Flippo, who has been endorsed by President Trump.
His team did not provide us a statement on birthright citizenship but did direct us to one over the transgender sports ruling, which can be seen below or here.
