On Cyber Monday, many people in the community will be shopping for the holidays online, but officials warn against possible scams lurking amid the deals.

"We just remind people that if you receive a text out of the blue about your package, chances are it's a phishing or a smishing scam," said Timothy Johnston with the Better Business Bureau.

These fake texts or emails can be used by scammers to get your information.

Scammers are also counting on customers being hasty and not paying much attention during this time of year.

"That's really what scammers are hoping that you'll do, is you'll click buy and move on and not really pay attention," said Johnston.

The Bureau also suggests alternate payment methods to debit cards, such as credit, gift cards, or payment services like PayPal.

The Sparks Police Department also gave some helpful tips to prevent theft when your packages arrive.

"One of the things that sounds kind of obvious is to set the delivery date and time of your package for when you're at home, or someone who lives in your household is at home for that delivery date," said Jacob Ross, Sparks PD Public Information Officer.

Ross also encourages that if you can't be home for delivery to make arrangements for someone trusted to receive the package or have an alternate package drop-off location.

He says security cameras can also be a great resource for keeping thieves away from your delivered packages.Â
