With dry windy weather comes the increased risk of wildfires.

Firefighters are asking residents to avoid activities that involve sparks or an open flame.

Target shooting is one of the leading causes of wildfires in Northern Nevada.

"We would strongly encourage people to use designated shooting ranges. That way they've cleared out all kinds of fuels and we're not shooting into sage brush and a lot of those fine flashy fuels," states Reno Fire Marshal, John Beck.

Beck adds that when target shooting, steel bullets are what creates the sparks, and lead bullets are a safer alternative.

Fire crews are urging people to avoid fire starting activities completely on dry windy days.

"No campfires, no bonfires, really no cooking with open flames. Propane is fine. Smoke indoors. Just be very aware of the kind of activity that you're engaging in and if it creates sparks," says Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue Communications officer, Adam Mayberry.

Mayberry says that Northern Nevadans should treat every day as if it is a critical fire day.

"It's really a team approach with all of our residents throughout Washoe County, Sparks and Reno to be very mindful of the activities they are engaging in and postpone those activities on gusty days that could trigger fires and be mindful that fire restrictions are in place and there are some activities that are strictly prohibited," adds Mayberry.

That includes setting off fireworks.

Fire crews also suggest that people keep some water and a shovel handy in case they come across a small fire.
