In part two of Josh Meny's interview with Nevada GOP U.S. Senate Candidate Sam Brown, the two discuss topics including the southern border, Yucca Mountain, and the state's abortion access petition. The full transcript of the interview is below.
Josh Meny
All right, Captain Brown, thank you again for joining us.
Sam Brown
It's good to be here, Josh.
Josh Meny
Now, when you were in the military, you saw Afghanistan and Iraq as a threat. Do you see the situation going on at the border as a threat to national security?
Sam Brown
Absolutely. What's happening at the border is a threat to national security, you don't have to look any further than reports where we have people unknown terror watch lists, not by like the, the, you know, handful here or there, by the hundreds have been detained crossing our border from countries that are aren't known to be antagonistic to the United States of America. And so it's, it's without a shadow of a doubt, a major threat, that we have an open border that allows for these people to just come across. And sometimes we don't even really catch it until they are past that point of sort of being temporarily detained.
Josh Meny
Now I have a friend who's Russian, he decided to leave Russia after Vladimir Putin decided to invade Ukraine. Now he has a daughter and a wife. He's a mathematician. He's trying to do it legally has been offered a job in the US, but can't make it to the US. Meanwhile, there's folks just walking through the border.
Sam Brown
This, I mean, this is just indicative of the broken system that DC has created. DC politicians have allowed for this border crisis to happen under Joe Biden's watch. And by the way, Jacky Rosen for anyone who thinks, you know, this is a terrible situation. And so humanitarian crisis, Jacky Rosen sits on the Homeland Security Committee and has for her six years effectively as a senator. And up until about a couple of weeks ago, the last time she had been to the border was in 2019. Now she's supposed to be providing oversight and watching what's happening there. You know, talking to those directly impacted and having our back, but she has failed to do that. And so rather than making it easier for highly qualified people who want to come in and be, you know, an additive part of our of our society of our economy, they embrace American values. They end up trying to follow the rule of law and stay at the back of a line that almost, you know, it moves so slowly. So it's perverse incentives created by DC. That's why DC is broken. It's one of the reasons why I'm running for the United States Senate.
CORRECTION: 2 NEWS NEVADA REPORTED THAT SENATOR JACKY ROSEN WENT TO THE BORDER IN JANUARY
Josh Meny
Now, let's go on to Yucca Mountain. Critics say you've supported it, and that shows that you're out of touch with the Nevada politics. From what you've said, it seems like more open ended, you would consider vetted pitches for the project. But President Trump last week said he's opposed to it. He told us in an exclusive interview with KTVN. You went on to X on Saturday, instead, you now officially oppose it was President Trump's stance on that anyway, influencing your decision?
Sam Brown
You know Josh, you you brought two really good points. One is you noted that I have been I think it's important that we remain open to things that could potentially create good economic value for the state. But the second is its critics who are who are attacking me on this. And look, I I have never stated that Yucca should be a permanent repository for nuclear waste. So it's, you know, it's political games led by Democrats to attack me on the issue. But what has been clear to me in my research is that Yucca is dead. It is not a viable project, and that's where it will remain.
Josh Meny
Now, you told NBC that you're against a federal abortion ban, however, there is a petition that will be on November 5th ballot to protect access to abortion when you go in on November 5th into the voting booth. What are your thoughts on that petition? Because you're going to have to vote on it?Â
Sam Brown
Yeah, I'll be one of approximately one and a half million voters at that point in time. And, and I have always said whether it was a decade ago or yesterday that this issue is something that should be addressed by the voters in their states. And so I respect that I have always respected that and the voters of Nevada will again determine what the approach is.
Josh Meny
Now, a lot of Northern Nevadans are of course concerned about the economy, the price of gas, the price of groceries. What will you do as a US senator to improve the economy here in Northern Nevada?
Sam Brown
The quickest thing we can do to try and help the economy here in Northern Nevada is to have a good American energy independence type policy and If we see the cost of fuels come down, that impacts everyone in a positive way, it'll help decrease inflation, it will help drop the rising prices. But DC and Jacky Rosen are for energy mandates where they're trying to push a certain energy agenda that naturally has higher cost to it. And so we need to allow the market to work, the market will work for we the people at a lower cost. And so that's the first thing we can do. Another thing that we need to do is we need to reject this overly aggressive executive branch that is allowing bureaucrats to just create regulation after regulation. I talked to business owners all the time, that some of which don't even realize that if they have an LLC, like a small family business, that their taxes are going to raise at the end of 2025. If we don't extend those tax cuts, and we're not talking about big corporations, I'm talking about family businesses, like restaurants or, you know, mechanic shops. And so the government has gotten so big, so many rules and regulations that people can't even keep track of it. And Jacky is for that sort of overbearing government. I want to pull that back and give us a lot more autonomy and decisions in our business life in our personal life.
Josh Meny
Now, you've had a really good start to your campaign fundraising. Major endorsements from the likes of Mitch McConnell to Mike Lee, what is your plan as we enter the final stretch until the June 11, statewide primary?
Sam Brown
Look, I've been consistent that I have gotten agenda for Nevadans, and I'm, I'm happy to have anyone join a broader coalition of people to support me and getting to DC. Joe Biden and Jacky Rosen have been bad for Nevada. And I travel around I talk to people on a daily basis. It's hard for me to get around anywhere without being recognized, which means I get to have a lot of great and candid conversations with people. I'm gonna continue to do that. I'm gonna continue to fight for people, whether it's on the closing the border issue, or helping our economy get back on track. I am here for Nevadans and anyone who wants to join this coalition. Please let me know join this team. Captain Sam Brown.com is a great place to get involved. And I'm just thrilled to have the support that we have.
Josh Meny
All right, Captain Sam Brown, and thank you very much for your time.Â
Sam Brown
Thank you, Josh.
