A new report from the Nevada Department of Public Safety shows that deadly crashes increased last year when compared to 2023, both statewide and in Washoe County.

The report suggests that throughout Nevada, the leading cause of crashes were speeding and impaired driving.

In 2024, 412 people in Nevada died as a result of a deadly crash which is an increase from 390 in 2023.

Washoe County also saw an increase in 2024, with 52 deaths from deadly crashes which is an increase from 47 in 2023.

The report also shows that there are consistent increases in deadly crashes from January through March and October through December.

Statewide in 2024, 112 pedestrians were killed and 64 people died because they were not wearing a seatbelt.

Nevada Highway Patrol says they will be working closely with other agencies this year to try and prevent deadly crashes and they want to do their best to continue educating the public.

However, in order to decrease the number in 2025, they say it has to be an effort from the entire community.

"Slow down, put your seatbelt on, leave plenty of time and if you're going to go out and have a drink or consume drugs, don't drive just plain and simple, just don't drive, make smart choices," said Acting Lieutenant Chris Brown, Public information Officer for the Nevada Highway Patrol.
