The City of Sparks Fire Department responded to two separate fires within a week, both started by residents attempting to burn weeds using propane-powered torches.

All forms of open burning, including the use of propane torches, are prohibited within the City of Sparks.

“Using propane-powered torches to burn weeds is illegal and dangerous,” said Fire Chief Walt White. “As fuels dry out this summer, we want to remind our residents that fire danger is high. We are also experiencing many red flag warning days that can quickly spread fires.”

City officials are also reminding the public that fireworks are illegal in Sparks and can easily ignite fires.

The City of Sparks warns that individuals who cause fires through the use of propane torches, fireworks, or other illegal activities will be held responsible for damages and fire suppression costs.

Fire pits are allowed if they are located at least 10 feet from any structure and have a mesh screen placed over the top.
