Dozens of native Nevada fish now have a new home at the University of Nevada, Reno, after a conservation effort moved them from the Truckee River to Manzanita Lake on campus.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife partnered with UNR on Wednesday to relocate native nongame fish to the lake. Most of the fish released were suckers, a native species found in the Truckee River.

UNR President Brian Sandoval joined the effort, releasing the first bucket of fish into the lake.

The relocation brings more native aquatic life to the center of campus while supporting efforts to conserve Nevada’s native fish species.

The project also reflects a partnership between NDOW and the university focused on protecting and supporting native fish.
