Mosquito with Carson City HHS logo

Carson City Health and Human Services will carry out mosquito abatement treatments the morning of Thursday, May 7, focusing on several public areas across the city, including Anderson/Buzzy Ranch, River View Park, Linear Ditch, and ponds east of I-580.

Officials said the operation will use a drone for aerial applications, a move aimed at improving precision when treating standing water where mosquitoes breed. The approach is designed to reduce the risk of mosquito-borne illness, including West Nile virus.

Health officials say mosquitoes lay eggs in very small amounts of water, and are asking residents to take steps at home to help limit mosquito breeding near homes and in the community.

Weekly checklist for residents:

  • Dump standing water from buckets, tires, toys, and plant saucers

  • Refresh water in birdbaths and pet bowls

  • Clean gutters and drains to improve drainage and prevent clogs

  • Maintain pools and check covers or tarps for pooled water

Residents are also encouraged to take precautions when spending time outside. That includes using EPA-registered repellents with ingredients such as DEET, Picaridin, IR3535, Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus, PMD, or 2-Undecanone.

Officials also recommend wearing long sleeves and pants, making sure window and door screens are intact, and avoiding outdoor activity during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
