The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for part of Washoe County on Friday evening.

The warning was issued for the southern part of the county, according to a release from the NWS.

At 5:15 p.m. a severe thunderstorm was located near Virginia Peak, 19 miles northeast of Reno, moving to the northeast.

The storm is producing torrential rainfall that could lead to flooding, as well as quarter-sized hail that could damage vehicles.

Locations expected to be affected include Nixon, Virginia Peak, and Spanish Springs.

People are advised to move to interior rooms or the lowest floor possible of the building they are in.

Do not drive through flooded roadways.

The warning is set to expire at 6 p.m.
