36th annual Outhouse Races winners

"El BaƱo" won the 36th annual World Championship Outhouse Races in Virginia City, overcoming an early lead from "Who's on Turd" in the final race.

It was the team's 23rd appearance, but its crew's first race. They say the victory was a great introduction to screaming down C Street.

"It feels good, we're a little lighter on the stomach now that we've won the outhouse races," says Baylor Horning, one of El BaƱo's pushers.

The Outhouse Races started in response to Virginia City banning outhouses.

Virginia City Director of Tourism Todd Tuttle says when Virginia City installed a sewer system, it asked the townsfolk to remove their outdoor toilets.

Tuttle also says he is displeased that neighbors complied but left them outside the courthouse. The city asked people to come get their outhouses, and the rest is history.

"People came with wagons or wheels, carts or whatever," Tuttle says, "and they realized, 'hey, this might be fun to create a race.' And so, we've been doing that race ever since."

Even though he didn't get the result he wanted, Josh Wood with "Doody Calls" says he's glad to be a part of a community event like this one.

"This is a recon mission this year," Wood says. "We won lots of hearts and minds. Maybe not so many races, but we'll fix that next year."

Tuttle says there are a few rules for the toilets on wheels, but they still allow for some creativity.

"It has to have a place to sit and relieve yourself. That's the number one requirement," Tuttle says.

He adds that the rolling thrones need "to have some resemblance to something that you would have seen as an outhouse. Then it's got to be human powered with somebody that can sit on the throne."
