Carson City’s new school year begins Tuesday, August 18, and the Carson City Sheriff’s Office says deputies and other personnel will monitor school zones and enforce traffic laws.
School Resource Officers, Traffic Units and Patrol Deputies will work together throughout the school year. The Division reminds drivers that Nevada law prohibits driving faster than 15 mph in posted school zones.
School zones are sections of streets next to school properties. Flashing school zone lights or flashing yellow lights, along with the posted speed limit, indicate when a school zone is active.
Drivers also cannot make U-turns or pass other vehicles while traveling through active school zones or school crossing zones.
Crossing guards will be positioned near elementary schools to help provide additional traffic safety for younger students using marked crosswalks.
Drivers approaching school buses should also pay close attention to the lights. Passing a school bus with red flashing lights is prohibited, as children may be getting off the bus and could enter the street.
The Sheriff’s Office is asking drivers, parents, students and crossing guards to be patient and mindful of one another, particularly during drop-off activity in school zones.
Law enforcement personnel will continue enforcing traffic safety laws throughout the year as part of an effort to reduce accidents and save lives. The Sheriff’s Office is reminding everyone who uses Carson City roadways to make safety a top priority.
