You know summer is over when respiratory illnesses are on the rise again.
“We've been seeing an increase in COVID cases, but also an increase in general, like colds,” says Stephanie Meny, a nurse practitioner at Northern Nevada Urgent Care.
Flu season is upon us, and COVID-19 cases aren't letting up either.
“I would say that we see it pretty commonly, just like at all times throughout the year,” Meny says, “but definitely, heading into the winter, we do see an increase in COVID numbers, and also flu numbers.”
With respiratory illnesses on the rise, there are several symptoms to watch out for.
Meny says common symptoms of COVID include “sore throat, cough, body aches, chills, fever, generally. There are more concerning symptoms that somebody can get, like chest pain, shortness of breath."
If you develop these symptoms, especially trouble breathing, it's time to seek treatment. Older people, and those with a condition like asthma, cancer, COPD, or diabetes, are at a higher risk.
“We do have antiviral treatment for COVID, which can help,” says Meny.
But if symptoms get more severe, especially if you can't catch your breath, the ER will be your best option.
Meny says there are two main ways you can stay healthy as flu season ramps up. One limits the spread of germs, and the other may already be on your to-do list.
“One is getting vaccinated just to prevent it in general,” she says, “but also just washing your hands and covering your cough if you're sick."
Flu season can create some uncertainty. There's no harm in going in person to get answers.
“Whether it's, do I need a prescription for this or what over-the-counter treatment is going to help me?” Meny says. “Definitely come in, and we'll get you evaluated and give you your next steps."
