For some Gardnerville students, finding the perfect pair of shoes came with a little extra help this week. A special pop-up shoe store brought brand-name footwear and other essentials to students at two local schools.

Scarselli Elementary School and Pau-Wa-Lu Middle School were among 15 schools selected for this year's Katie Grace Foundation shoe program, according to the Douglas County School District in a Facebook post.

The foundation brought about 1,500 pairs of shoes to Wednesday's event, where approximately 250 students were expected to participate. Starbucks volunteers helped students find the right sizes, try on shoes, and pick their favorite styles, including Nike, Converse, and Vans.

Students also received three pairs of socks, a tribute to Katie, whose favorite number was three. Those who needed additional items could choose winter jackets, beanies, gloves, and school supplies. Whole Foods also provided fresh food for the event.

The program's expansion into Gardnerville marks a change for the foundation, which typically selects schools in the Reno area.

"We decided to go to our surrounding areas," shared Kimberly Weingartner, founder of the Katie Grace Foundation. "We chose Minden because Starbucks is one of our sponsors, and we know that Starbucks is out in this area."

Weingartner started the foundation in memory of her daughter, Katie, who died 10 years ago. She said her daughter was known for her kindness, generosity, and ability to make others feel welcome.

"She loved shoes, and I love shoes, so we just decided to make this part of her legacy," Weingartner shared.

What began with 40 pairs of shoes purchased with Weingartner's own money has grown into a program that has distributed more than 7,000 pairs of new shoes to children in need.

The foundation's annual shoe program is supported by donations and community partnerships. Hot August Nights provides major financial support, while other businesses and brands contribute shoes and additional supplies.

"It's strictly about kids that are in need and could use a new pair of shoes," Weingartner explained.

The foundation also works with nonprofit organizations throughout Northern Nevada, distributing donated products and essential supplies to underserved communities.
