An annual tradition started in cooperation with Honor Flight Nevada, the lighting of the Gold Star Tree took place Saturday afternoon at the Atlantis in Reno.

The ceremony starts with family and community members decorating the tree with 100 gold-framed photos of service members who have passed.

Organizers say the purpose of the annual Gold Star Tree is to honor and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for all our freedoms; and to bring comfort to their families, knowing their loved ones are not forgotten.

The tree-lighting ceremony featured free holiday cookies and refreshments for those in attendance.

If you'd like to see the Gold Star Tree in person, you can find it at Bistro Napa on the second floor of the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa.

More information about the tree can be found at the Gold Star Tree website.
