Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021; the City of Reno began observing the day in 2022, and Nevada officially recognized the holiday as a state holiday following legislation signed into law in 2023. The holiday commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Texas carrying federal orders announcing the end of slavery.
