On Monday, Governor Lombardo discussed the emergency regulation he approved last Friday to help school districts struggling with declining enrollment.
Speaking at a school in Las Vegas, Lombardo said the action would stave off layoffs and preserve school programs.
"It means teachers stay in classrooms. It means students can keep learning without their schools having to make sudden mid-year cuts, and it gives school teachers the stability they need to plan responsibly instead of making decisions backed into a corner."
The governor signed an emergency regulation that would allow schools to receive funding based on the enrollment figures approved during this past legislative session, rather than the actual counts, which are lower.
"Now let me be clear, this is a temporary solution. We are not pretending that enrollment trends are going to disappear. We need to work with the legislature, school districts, educators, and other stakeholders to make sure our funding system reflects the realities Nevada schools are facing."
Lombardo says this means more than $13 million in addtional funding will go out to the school districts in the upcoming payment.
The hope is to give schools more time to adjust to declining enrollment numbers while state leaders work towards a longer term solution.
