If you drive off I-80 eastbound, you've no doubt noticed how bad traffic can pile up there.
The Regional Transportation Commission and Storey County are working to make a connection between Spanish Springs, East Sparks, and the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center.
They’re having a meeting Tuesday night from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Washoe County Chambers.
This meeting will present the final report to the RTC Board to get direction on how they want to handle the project.
Josh MacEachern, the Public Information Officer for the Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County, told us, "The RTC team was presented with the problem, and the problem was that there's a lot of traffic on I-80. Any kind of incident can severely delay or put safety at risk, and there's not a lot of backup options, so if you're going out to the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center, you might have a problem if there's any kind of traffic incident at all.”
RTC tells us they're looking at two potential routes that can be used for this project to create a second route into the Tahoe-Reno Industrial Center -- La Posada and Vista Blvd.
They tell us many community members have voiced their concerns when it comes to the routes.
They said people showing up to these meetings allows them to learn more about what the public is feeling and thinking.
"I think everyone who's taking that route knows that there's a problem, and everyone knows it's not a very resilient route. People know that there should be some kind of backup option, but also people that live in the area have concerns about environmental impacts, about potential noise from large trucks," said MacEachern.
They encourage people to come out to the meeting on Tuesday to have any questions they have answered and to learn more about this project.
