Hunsberger Elementary School is the first school in Washoe County School District to become green certified.
Western Nevada College and greenUPI made the announcement on behalf of the Nevada Green Business Network in a press release on Thursday.
The Washoe County School District has worked on energy conservation through the years by using LED lighting, ground-source heating and cooling systems, solar installations and electric buses.
This year, Hunsberger completed its Tier 1 Green Certification.
"Hunsberger Elementary demonstrates what happens when a district and its students work toward a common goal,” said Sandor Rosta, Energy and Sustainability Manager for Washoe County School District. “Hunsberger teacher Aaron Grossman and his fifth-grade students took the lead on green certification as a classroom, part of their capstone commitment, and carried it across the finish line. We value the leadership demonstrated by Mr. Grossman and his class.”
Fifth-grade students Aeron and Ravi took on the green schools checklist and delegated projects such as checking with custodial and administrative staff about purchasing policies and chemical inventory, counting LED lights and energy-efficient appliances, and collecting numerical data from the district’s databases.
