Labor Day recognizes the workers who keep our communities and country moving, while also taking a moment to appreciate the holiday's history.
The holiday grew out of the labor movement in the late 19th century, as workers and advocates pushed for recognition of the contributions working people make to the country. In 1894, Congress made Labor Day a legal national holiday, observed on the first Monday of September.
Today, Labor Day is about all workers and the social and economic contributions they make, whether they are spending the holiday with family and friends or heading to work as usual.
For many people, it is a welcome day off and a chance to enjoy the final stretch of summer. But for others, it is another day on the job, serving customers, caring for others, keeping businesses running, and providing the services communities rely on.
Wherever you are and whatever work you do, today is a good day to recognize the effort that goes into making our communities work.
From all of us at 2 News Nevada, thank you to all the workers out there. We appreciate what you do. Happy Labor Day!
