'Love Our Lake' an anti-litter media campaign was born after an exploratory class at Incline Middle School inspired its students to take a call to action raising awareness to keep Lake Tahoe beautiful and free of litter.
The students as part of the campaign had an art contest to design its logo.
The jazz band and several of its aspiring singers wrote and performed a rap song.
Their music choice is Chameleon by Herbie Handcock.
Their original lyrics begin with “More than a lake, for real, a genuine treasure, but ya’ll just treating it like whatever. Peaks and waterfalls are our blessed view, but your garbage all around just won’t do.”
They later produced a music video and public service announcement promoting the cause.
The campaign says that its efforts are to raise awareness and call out people, both locals and visitors from participating in littering in Lake Tahoe and on all its beaches.
As has been seen many times after large events or holidays, Lake Tahoe beaches are left littered with tons of trash from one end to the other along its coastline.
The campaign says that according to the League to Save Lake Tahoe, the public outrage that followed the 4th of July celebration the year before last when one of its beaches was left completely covered in trash along its entirety has helped to lessen the problem when "Remember Zephyr Beach" became a war cry.
They say that hundreds of volunteers show up every holiday to help clean the beaches by collecting all the trash left behind.
As part of their campaign, the students created the slogan “Don’t Mess with Tessie”, and from a student art contest, designs of this well-known fictional Lake Tahoe creature were born as seen above.
The students to further promote their cause are offering merchandise as part of their campaign strategy in hopes of spreading their message throughout the Tahoe region.
They hope to recruit other student ambassadors at area schools to help coordinate efforts and encourage positive civic activism for their cause.
