The Food Bank of Northern Nevada is urging the community to take action during Hunger Action Month, highlighting the growing need for food assistance across its 90,000-square-mile service area.
The organization currently helps 160,000 people each month and is preparing for even more residents in need, as potential cuts to SNAP benefits loom.
To help raise awareness and inspire participation, local influencer Kevin Ashton, TikTok's sorority chef known to millions as @oldscoolkevmo for his cooking videos, is joining the food bank as chief ambassador.
“It breaks my heart that 1 in 5 of our children in Nevada don’t have access to the nutritious food they need,” Ashton said. “This partnership is my chance to inspire and encourage Nevadans to roll up their sleeves with me and work to make sure no child goes without a healthy meal.”
As part of the campaign, Ashton will appear at the Raley’s O-N-E Market at 18144 Wedge Parkway in Reno on Saturday, September 13, from 1-3 p.m., for a cooking demonstration, meet and greet, and opportunities for attendees to get involved.
Residents can volunteer, advocate for hunger programs, or start virtual food drives, with each action helping those experiencing food insecurity.
