If you use West 4th Street to get around Reno, your usual drive is going to look different starting Thursday.
Crews are moving into paving work on the Regional Transportation Commission’s West 4th Street Safety Project, bringing a series of closures and one-way traffic patterns that will remain in place through mid-November.
The first major change starts Oct. 1. West 4th Street will be completely closed between Keystone Avenue and Vine Street through Oct. 29.
Keystone Avenue itself will remain open to northbound and southbound traffic. Drivers will also still be able to turn onto westbound 4th Street at Keystone.
If you’re traveling farther east or west, there’s another change to keep in mind. Traffic will be westbound only between Stoker Avenue and Keystone Avenue from Oct. 1 through Oct. 29.
Then, beginning Oct. 5, traffic will switch to eastbound only between McCarran Boulevard and Summit Ridge Drive. That change will remain in place through Nov. 13.
The stretch between Summit Ridge Drive and Stoker Avenue will stay open in both directions, with one lane available each way.
The changes are part of the work needed to get the $24 million project substantially completed by the end of November. Construction on the project began in February.
“This traffic changes were carefully planned by the entire project team in coordination with the City of Reno,” said RTC Project Manager Scott Gibson. “We considered a wide range of factors, including residents and businesses, school bus routes and public transit stops, truck access, neighboring projects, and how to complete the work as efficiently and safely as possible. We appreciate the community’s continued patience as we make these improvements.”
Drivers should plan for extra travel time, follow posted detour signs, and pay attention to flagger commands.
You’ll also see more trucks coming into and out of the work zone. Some trucks may need to use a closure to access the construction area, so drivers should use extra caution.
Construction crews are scheduled to work from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., with some weekend work possible. The traffic changes themselves will remain in effect around the clock.
The project will eventually bring a rebuilt roadway, new roundabouts at Stoker Avenue and Summit Ridge Drive, a multi-use path and sidewalk, lane reductions between Edwards Way and McCarran Boulevard, and improved storm drain infrastructure.
The project is expected to be completed in November. All construction work is weather-dependent and subject to change.
