The Nevada Office of Traffic Safety, part of the Nevada Department of Public Safety, has released their December 2024 year-to-date fatality report.
According to the report, 412 people lost their lives on Nevada roadways in the year 2024, which is a 5.64% increase from 2023.
Of those deaths, 112 of them are pedestrian deaths; another 64 of the fatalities were people not wearing seatbelts.
The top contributing factors are listed as impairment and speeding.
Digging into the numbers, crashes went up in Nevada in 2024 by 7.1% - with January seeing a 56% increase over the previous year.
Locally, Washoe County saw a 4.35% increase in crashes and a 10.64% increase in fatalities. Motorcyclist fatalities went up in the county by 62.5% over the last year.
On a more positive note, pedestrian deaths trended down in Washoe County by 27.78% when compared to 2023, and bicyclist deaths were down by 25%.
