Door to Door Salesman with NSCB logo

With the nicer weather on its way, the Nevada State Contractors Board wants to warn homeowners to be on the lookout for scams.

The board says to be on the lookout for unsolicited offers from door-to-door salesmen or anyone advertising inexpensive services on websites like Craigslist.

If you're hiring for work that requires a licensed professional, but you're unsure what type of license is needed - you can always call the Board to verify what's required.

To protect yourself, the Board says to take note of the following warning signs:

  • Door-to-door solicitors offering "free" home inspections and estimates.
  • Someone who has "extra materials" on hand and can begin work immediately, often at a discounted cost.
  • Requiring cash-only payments or checks payable to an individual instead of the company they are affiliated with.
  • Aggressive sales tactics creating an uncomfortable interaction.
  • Company information provided does not match the Board’s license information.

They say homeowners can often combat these tactics by ensuring that they hire a licensed contractor.
