North Lyon Fire is temporarily suspending open burning starting Monday, because of gusty winds in the forecast.
The suspension applies to all areas within the North Lyon County Fire Protection District, including Fernley.
North Lyon Fire says open burning is expected to resume at 5 a.m. Tuesday, unless the suspension is extended.
Anyone who violates the terms of a burn permit could face a misdemeanor citation. The district also said people responsible for violations that lead to emergency responses may be charged for the cost of fighting a fire.
Residents can check the current burn status at the North Lyon Fire homepage. A red banner at the top of the website means burning is not authorized.
