The Board of Directors of Pet Network Humane Society in Incline Village held an emergency meeting after discovering what it's calling "substantial fraud."
The Pet Network of Lake Tahoe says the suspected fraud was initially discovered after a discrepancy in the organization’s IRS status.
The board began reviewing other financial activity and uncovered falsified financial records, accounting irregularities and potentially more than $2.5 million in missing funds over several years.
According to the board, one employee has been fired, and the unidentified person appears to have acted alone.
Pet Network says it is taking immediate civil and criminal legal action to recover the missing funds, and that the theft will not impact day-to-day operations.
