The City of Reno, in partnership with the Nevada Department of Wildlife is launching the Bear-Resistant Cart Rebate Program.
It's designed to help prevent bears and other wildlife from accessing household garbage.
Through the program, the first 120 eligible City of Reno residents to sign up will receive a bear-resistant trash can and quarterly rebates on their Waste Management bill for one year.
Residents interested can sign up at the Bear-Resistant Cart Rebate Program registration page.
Those in neighborhoods with frequent bear or animal activity are especially encouraged to apply.
Areas in Reno with high bear activity include Caughlin Ranch, along the Steamboat, Last Chance and Lake Ditches, south Reno west of Virginia Street, and along Mt. Rose Hwy.
According to NDOW, more than 90% of bear-related calls involve unsecured garbage and other household attractants
