Music and live orchestra performances are coming to Reno this May, with students in third through fifth grade taking part in a week of education concerts, and families invited to a separate free public concert at the Pioneer Center.
The Reno Phil is closing out its Music Education Festival with a full lineup of free community events, educational performances, and concerts running May 7 through May 9, centered at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts and other Reno venues.
The week begins with four Young People’s Concert performances on May 7 and May 8 at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. at the Pioneer Center, where third through fifth-grade students will be introduced to live orchestral music at no cost to schools or families. Attendance is expected to reach more than 5,500 students.
On May 7, the Reno Phil will also host an Education Open House from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the California Building in Idlewild Park. The free event gives families a chance to meet program staff, connect with musicians, and experience live music from the Discover Brass and Wind ensemble. Wine, beer, and snacks will be available.
On May 8, the morning Young People’s Concerts continue, followed that evening by a Youth Orchestra Chamber Recital at 6 p.m. at the Steinway Piano Gallery. The performance features top Youth Symphony Orchestra musicians and is open to the public at no cost.
The festival concludes May 9 with a free family concert titled The Orchestra Moves at 11 a.m. at the Pioneer Center. The one-hour performance is designed for all ages and focuses on how music moves listeners emotionally and physically. Pre-concert activities run from 10 a.m. to 10:55 a.m. and include coloring stations, craft activities, and other interactive experiences in the lobby. Children of all ages are encouraged to attend, and no reservations are required.
The day wraps up at 6 p.m. with the Youth Orchestra Spring Showcase at the Pioneer Center, featuring more than 250 student musicians from four youth orchestras.
