Sonia Manzano, known for her role as “Maria” on Sesame Street, will speak in Carson City at the end of this month.
The Carson City School District will host Sonia Manzano at the Carson City Community Center on Tuesday, September 30, during a multilingual event organized by the district’s Multilingual Learner Vision Team in recognition of National Hispanic Heritage Month.
The event will begin with a book signing from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m., followed by a bilingual keynote and Question and Answer session from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. in the Bob Baldrick Theater.
The first 50 attendees will receive a signed copy of one of Manzano’s books.
Food trucks will be on site with meals and refreshments available for purchase during the event.
Manzano will speak about the role of language, culture, and family in student development, and how communities can support learners.
“This is a rare opportunity for our students and families to hear from someone who has dedicated her life to empowering youth and is a visionary leader for children and families,” said Christie Perkins, director of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and Student Wellness for the Carson City School District. “We’re honored to welcome Sonia Manzano to Carson City.”
