On Tuesday, the Sparks City Attorney’s Office announced convictions obtained last year for two people on domestic battery charges.
Juan Mena was convicted of domestic battery stemming from an incident that happened on October 12 of last year.
Officers went to a home after a woman called dispatch and was heard crying and said she had been in a fight with her boyfriend, who had been stalking her.
She also said she was bleeding from her nose and mouth.
When officers arrived, the victim said she was asleep in her bed when she was woken up by Mena.
An argument happened, and Mena restrained the victim, who started to scream for help.
The victim continued screaming after Mena told her to be quiet to avoid police being alerted, which led to Mena choking her.
He also hit her in the nose and put his hand over her mouth.
When Mena saw her bleeding, he stepped away, allowing her to call the police.
Mena did not answer questions from officers, but blood was found on his left forearm.
On November 11 of last year, Mena was convicted for domestic battery. He was sentenced to 180 days in the Washoe County Jail suspended for two years on the condition he serve two days in the  Washoe County Jail, complete 48 hours of community service, pay a $200 fine plus administrative assessments, pay a $35 domestic violence fee, complete 26 weeks of domestic violence counseling, have no contact with the victim, and obey all laws.
In a separate case, prosecutors secured a domestic violence conviction against Jammal Massey for an incident that happened on November 20 of last year.
On that day, officers responded to a home in Sparks, with SPD noting it had been dispatched to the same home 13 times since July 1 of 2024.
When officers arrived, they found a woman who had recently given birth and was recovering from a car crash.
She told officers that Massey, her boyfriend and father of her child, had gone into the bathroom while she was showering and started yelling at her.
She told him to leave the bathroom, but the argument got worse, and Massey turned the water on hot in an attempt to burn her.
The victim said Massey then began throwing things around, including her phone, and punched a hole in the bathroom door.
He also began to clench his fists and make aggressive movements toward her.
The woman tried to push Massey out of the bathroom, and he pushed her back.
Officers found a red scratch on the victim's neck. She said her two children were home during the incident.
Officers could not find Massey on the day of the incident, but were dispatched the next day for a welfare check by Child Protective Services.
CPS called in the welfare check after a worker reported that she had been on the phone with the victim and heard an argument between the victim and Massey, where Massey could be heard using slurs and insults.
The victim was heard pleading with Massey to allow her to keep the baby due to breastfeeding.
The victim was able to leave the home with both children and met with a domestic violence advocate who placed the woman and her children into safe housing.
Massey was arrested on November 21 and convicted on December 3.
He was sentenced to 180 days in the Washoe County Jail suspended for two years on the condition he serve two days in the  Washoe County Jail, complete 48 hours of community service, pay a $200 fine plus administrative assessments, pay a $35 domestic violence fee, complete 26 weeks of domestic violence counseling, complete an effects of violence in the home parenting class, have no contact with the victim, be tested for drugs and alcohol through the court’s compliance program, have no drugs or alcohol, and obey all laws.
