TMFPD pile burning

The Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District is lifting all fire restrictions starting Sunday, Nov. 1.

The district will also begin its open burning season, which runs through April 30, 2027, weather and conditions permitting.

Open burning, also known as pile burning, allows residents to burn cut and stacked vegetation to reduce combustible fuels and create defensible space around their properties.

Pile burning is permitted only on properties with parcels of at least half an acre and you must meet the following requirements:

  • Obtain an approved 2026–2027 burn permit. Permits from previous years are not valid.
  • Confirm that TMFPD has designated the day as a permissible burn day.
  • Open Burning should be conducted at least 25 feet from any structure or other combustible materials.

Despite improved conditions, TMFPD reminds residents that wildfire risk remains, especially during periods of high winds.
