ORIGINAL STORY:
A suspect is dead after leading officers on a lengthy pursuit that ended in a fiery crash Sunday night in Lyon County.
Deputies say the incident started just before 7 p.m. when witnesses called dispatch reporting the suspect failed to stop at several traffic stops, almost hitting a pedestrian. The witness also told authorities he bought alcohol at a gas station and then sped off.
Nevada State Police found the suspect car and then tried to make a traffic stop, but the suspect drove off and a pursuit ensued.
Deputies say the suspect collided with several cars while speeding in the Fernley area. Authorities say they tried many times to stop the car out of public safety concerns, but the suspect did not stop, even ramming a deputy's car, at one point. Eventually, the man crashed into a deputy's patrol car, but again sped off. Authorities say that crash damaged the patrol car so much it could not move.
From there other deputies followed the man onto a dirt road, eastbound onto Newlands Drive near Nevada Pacific Boulevard.
After the suspect's car appeared to create a cloud of dust, deputies drove closer to find it on fire. They removed the man and performed CPR. North Lyon County Fire Department Personnel arrived to put out the car fire, stopping it from spreading.
The unidentified suspect died on scene - and was the only person inside the car.
One Lyon County Sheriff's Deputy was treated for minor injuries while another deputy was evaluated for possible bio-hazard contamination after pulling the man from the fiery car.
Nevada State Police are conducting an investigation into the incident and numerous crashes that happened.
The Storey County Sheriff's Office is investigating the suspect's death.
This is ongoing investigation.
