The Truckee Police Department is warning residents about an ongoing scam involving callers impersonating law enforcement officers and demanding money.
Scammers may claim you missed jury duty, have an outstanding warrant, owe a fine or fee, or need to make an immediate payment to avoid arrest.
Truckee Police says it will never call and demand money. Officers will not ask residents to send money, purchase gift cards or prepaid debit cards, or provide banking or financial information over the phone.
Scammers can also spoof caller ID, making it appear that a call is coming from the Truckee Police Department or another legitimate law enforcement agency.
If you're unsure whether a call is legitimate, hang up and contact Truckee Police directly using a phone number you know is valid.
You can call Truckee Police Non-Emergency Dispatch at 530-550-2320.
